Silence does speak a thousand words!
Ever wondered why many people chose to shut their mouth and express their emotions through their body language? ever wondered why is it said that " silence is a girls last way of expressing anger" ???
ever wondered why mime acting is so powerful that without uttering a single word audiences are able to connect better involved and affected by performances of the actors?
To your surprise let me tell you all this happens because when we are silent WE SPEAK EVEN MORE LOUD.
Yes you read that right. It a scientifically proven fact that body-language makes 97% of conversation which means speaking and our tone come in the category of left-out 3%.
The word "body-LANGUAGE" speaks for itself that is it too is a form of language like English, Russian, German, Indian etc.
For example, the very common phrase "first impression is the last impression" means when a person sees you for the first time he makes a picture about you in his/her mind. That picture makes lasting impression because in the first meeting a person makes a certain impression about you in flashes of pictures like the camera does it. So, our mind works like a camera that clicks the picture of strangers in flashes of seconds. Those pictures last for a very long time in our sub-conscious mind which affect that persons attitude/behaviour towards us.
Now, for that picture to be beautiful and memorable you need to have a very good and strong body language because whenever or wherever you are going or even sitting your body is communicating certain messages to universe and its people around you.
In order to have that charming first impression you need to start communicating in the right fashion with your body-language and use it as an added advantage for yourself.
Always remember whatever you think your body reacts in the same manner. For example, if you put forward a certain message but you do not believe in it your body is bound to reflect that.
So, first and foremost tip to achieve that great body language is to believe in whatever you say. Just don't speak words from your mouth because you have to, say them because you believe that your opinion will change the lives of many people.
Here are common body language blunders that people make :
1. Mistaken Gestures
Gestures are actions. The movement of the limbs, tilting of the head, shrugging of shoulders etc . . . are examples of gesture. Improper gesture is one of the most common mistake that people make for example, during an interview if a candidate has his arms crossed then it indicates that the candidate is of defensive nature, keeps secrets and not open to communication. Therefore it is very important to maintain a proper gesture during communication.
2. Improper Posture
Posture is a way a person carries himself. The way a person stands the way he walks says, much about his personality. If a person stands in a very stiff manner then it may create problem for the speaker as it may be offensive and unnatural reaction towards the speaker, however if a person stands in a natural manner then it indicates confidence, and it also becomes easy to maintain eye contact. But, don't confuse natural with the way you have made your body accustomed. Natural here does not mean slouching back or pooching tummy. It means your spine should be erect and in coordination with your neck and shoulders.
3. Appearance Blunder
Many times people make appearance mistakes, it is very important to dress right for the right occasion. One common appearance mistake is dressing in a sloppy manner. If a person dresses himself in a sloppy manner then, it is an indication that he doesn’t care about things and that he is unprofessional. on the other hand if a person dresses decently then it creates a good impression on the mind of speaker. Another common appearance mistake is that people don’t dress according to the occasion, for example formal dressing will be out of place in a casual party. Also, people the only thing that matters more than your dress is your shoes. Yes! before checking you out people check your shoes so do not overlook them. Have a good decent pair for every occasion and please no dirty shoes here.
4. Avoiding Eye Contact
This is one of the top common slip-ups that people make for some reason. Everyone knows the theory that if someone is avoiding eye contact, it means that the person is lying or hiding something. Not everyone may be comfortable looking at someone’s eye, but lack of eye contact does give the impression that the person is afraid that someone will see right through them. But do not go all the way looking into someone's eye without blinking that would give the impression of being a ZOMBIE . Keep a healthy eye contact between conversations that suggest that you are confident about what you are saying and invite question in its context with an open heart.
5. Fiddling or Fidgeting
Regardless of if you’re on a date or at a job interview, fiddling and fidgeting is not an endearing habit. It screams lack of confidence, insecurity, disinterest or nervousness. Take your pick. One thing’s for sure, don’t expect a call from the potential employer or a second date.
Therefore, your body language can help you a lot in communication as people observe your body language almost as much as they listen to what you are saying and the end result is that they believe your body language more than what you are saying. You can practice on your body language to make sure that you are sending the right message across.
